I went on a date with my mate, I Eat Melbourne. There is no one else I would have wanted to pop my “Covid Event Cherry” with, than the stylish Melbourne food man himself! The Ormond Collective, formerly known as The Belgian Beer garden, has come at the perfect time. The people of Melbourne need a reason to smile and a place to celebrate. It’s here. We were greeted with what is assumed to be the new normal, a QR code check in and hand sanitiser on arrival. We walked into the Garden Cafe, greeted with Grapefruit Spritz, finger sandwiches, chicken salad and delightful strawberry love cakes.
Every detail has been thought of, every fixture and fitting is there for a reason. The green and white gingham face masks worn by the staff, styled with the uniforms, didn’t even feel out of place as they matched the cushions and details throughout the space. Apart from the awkward moment of wondering, what is the mask etiquette at a restaurant? It was a pleasant preview of the Summer to come and a joy to see the launch of what will surely be a Melbourne institution.
